• 在圖書資訊學的領域中，認定的資訊行為以資訊檢索行為(information seeking behavior)為核心，再以此出發往前（資訊需求）與往後（資訊使用）發展一套理性判斷行為模型。但是，人類的心理認知行為中，與涉及資訊的行為活動並不僅僅於此。舉凡閱讀、筆記與註記、書寫、理解與詮釋、歸類、標記、溝通表達、決策等等，都是與資訊相關的人類資訊活動。除了資訊學與認知科學之外，人類的資訊活動也涉及了對於他人的預期以及社會認知因素的影響，因此也涉及了社會科學中的經濟學（微觀經濟學、賽局理論、資訊經濟學等）以及社會學（社會資訊學、知識社會學等）等等相關理論。
• 學術傳統定義：
  • Wilson(1995, 1997) 歸納資訊尋求行為研究(information seeking behavior)，與後續資訊需求(information need)與資訊使用(information use)研究，提出一整合性的研究主題：資訊行為研究(information behavior)
  • Wilson (2000): 「人類與資訊來源、管道相關行為的總和，包括主動與被動的資訊尋求、與資訊使用。」
  • 儘管資訊行為的定義仍然不清，有各種的定義，然而在許多期刊文獻與課程上已經廣泛的使用這個詞彙。
  • Pettigrew, Fidel & Bruce(2001)在ARIST中，定義為「對人們如何在不同情境中，包括在工作場所與日常生活中，對資訊的需求、尋求、給出與使用的研究」。
