During the last decade there has been substantial discussion of four major publishing models where readers could access articles without a fee: electronic journals, hybrid paper-electronic journals, authors' self-posting on web sites, and disciplinary repositories where authors post their own unrefereed articles. 經過過去十年，四個主要被討論的免費取用論文模式：電子期刊、紙本電子混合期刊、作者自行網路發佈、作者發佈在未經評閱的學科典藏。
