Abstract

Television viewing coupled with audience interaction through a second screen has gained popularity as second screen capable devices have become more pervasive and affordable.
In this paper, we investigate the nature of television audiences which engage in second screen interactions.
Two different television show audiences are explored though their message activity while using the Twitter social blogging service.
Connections are made between users when retweeting messages or mentioning other users in a message.
The networks of viewers which are formed when viewers connect through these means reveal different characteristics within the audience networks and imply that different motivations for second screening while watching television shows are in play.

Content

> The growth in significance of a connected and networked television audience which communicates through digital backchannels is becomming more commonly recognized by broadcasters, with many displaying Twitter ‘hashtags’ on screen to allow the second screening audience to ‘tune’ their data streams to one focused upon the particular broadcast being viewed.

The focal point and contextual driver for second screen co-viewing activity is the TV broadcast content. Predominantly ‘live’ or ‘as scheduled’ shows, the actors, participants and narratives are discussed, commented on or spoken to, by social networks of connected viewers using a range of social network platforms or technologies. While TV provides a context, then the social networking activity of the viewing audience is a catalyst to a new, more engaged viewing audience. Audience members may see themselves as more deeply integrated into the media ‘ecosystem’ rather than being passive consumers of media messages [24].

  • 選擇兩個電視節目: BBC Question Time(每周政論節目 #bbcqt), Strictly Come Dancing (實況舞蹈投票競賽 #scd)
Gephi network analysis tool; OpenOrd network visualization algorithm plugin

      > There is no temporal element to reciprocity of user links in this network. Unlike in a friendship network, where friendships can be made and withdrawn, once a mention or retweet has been made it is fixed.
