研究分析使用者(圖書館員)與專業索引者，對三項書後索引的性質的偏好：

* 標目子項(sub heading)的排列方式：是逐行排列(line-by-line)；或是在主標目後，不斷行接連著排列(run-on)？
* 標目的字母排序方式：是按照字母(letter by letter)；或是字(word by word)的次序？
* 重複的主題標目的處理：直接重複(duplicate)；或是用「見(see)」來指引？

研究結果發現，不論使用者(圖書館員)或專業索引者，都傾向利用逐行排列(line-by-line)的標目子項(sub heading)，及依照字(word by word)的次序來排列標目。而只有重複的主題標目的處理方面的意見並不一致，在使用者方面明顯較多人傾向直接重複標目，而在專業索引者方面，雖然數量上有較多人表示偏好直接重複標目，差距並不顯著。
